United Kingdom Broadens Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Alert List with 11 Nations
British authorities has placed an additional eleven more nations to its travel alert register about the risks of methanol toxicity from contaminated alcoholic drinks.
This updated travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "an international surge in the incidence of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Only a few weeks ago, authorities had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, in response to multiple serious events including the tragic loss of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of methanol can cause vision loss or death within 12 to 48 hours.
Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Used?
Toxic alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol often utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. It is not designed for ingestion.
While it is generated during the manufacture of spirits, reputable manufacturers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the distillation process.
But in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to cut costs, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is impossible to notice.
Authorities' Recommendations for Tourists
Authorities minister a senior official stated that all travellers should be aware of the symptoms of toxic alcohol poisoning.
"If you're consuming alcohol abroad, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of local brews or free shots," the minister advised.
"In case something seems unusual, like a fatigue that's way worse than typical or vision problems – seek medical attention right away."
The complete register of countries listed as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
