The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after losing a no-confidence vote that followed his controversial online comments about Charlie Kirk.

The motion against the student leader achieved the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the society.

Contentious Posts

The dispute began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that seemed to welcome the death of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in the United States.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The student leader is also reported to have posted in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The vote of confidence took place over the recent days, with outcomes revealed on this week.

Society announcements indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting no confidence, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The notice stated that the future president was deemed to have resigned in accordance with the society's regulations.

Election Controversies

Voting operations were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.

In a response, the student asserted that the count had been stopped because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".

His statement unequivocally denied that any representative acting for George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Continuing Controversy

The president-elect stated that significant concerns had been submitted to the governing body and that he continued as the elected leader.

His statement added that he was "proud and thankful to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Opponents have said that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Responses

On Friday, Mikey McCoy read out an public message to the society on a related program broadcast.

The message accused the union of becoming a institution where "student leaders openly applaud the killing of a ideological rival".

The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had earlier condemned the student's remarks after Kirk's death and stated that concerns submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of multiple members to discuss with the activist at the union in May.
